Childrens Ground Fundraiser

Melba Spiegeltent, Johnston Street, Collingwood. Victoria

On May 27, be part of an incredible celebration of music and culture at the Melba Spiegeltent, featuring national icons, artists and storytellers Archie Roach and Shane Howard, with the Black Rock Band from West Arnhem Land.

This unforgettable evening will raise funds for Children's Ground, a bold not-for-profit organisation aiming to celebrate First Nations cultures and knowledge systems, create life-long opportunities to end intergenerational disadvantage in First Nations communities and reset the national policy framework based on equity and justice.

Children's Ground represents the first integrated and long-term effort to stand beside First Nations families while they design the future they want for their children. It means putting the next generation first. It means prioritising people's family language, culture, identity and country. It means prioritising lifelong learning and wellbeing of children from birth. It means creating opportunities that will build opportunity in global and local economies. We cannot accept conditions that lead to children living with life-long risks of incarceration, ill health, child protection and cultural stress. The current approaches are unacceptable and need to change. All children deserve the best life has to offer and to be honoured in their cultures. This is Children’s Ground. Please join us to celebrate the future generations and the children, families and communities who lead Children’s Ground.

Shane Howard Trio

Clarendon Theatre, 68A Lurline St, Katoomba NSW 2780

‘Deeper South’ is an album that redefines the boundaries of Australian folk music and reinvigorates it with poetic and musical mastery. The musical influences are as diverse as jazz, blues, country, Australian folk music and the deep well of traditional Celtic music. On this album, Shane’s great musicality is enriched by the accomplished playing of John Hudson (Guitar/Dobro) and Ewen Baker (Fiddle/Mandolin). The live show rocks and rolls, like a boat ploughing deep into Antarctic waters, set free from the troubles that beset the land, sailing wildly into the tempest of mighty squalls. Gentler songs are deeply meditative, picture the calm, glassy, seas of Summer. Irish and Scottish tunes flow in and out, like ocean currents. This is true folk music, but not as we know it!

1835-The Founding of Melbourne and the Conquest of Australia

St Kilda Town Hall, 99a Carlisle Street, St Kilda. Victoria

An afternoon featuring well known Tasmanian author, James Boyce, and popular singer songwriter Shane Howard. The history of white settlement has never been popular amongst non-indigenous Australians. Much easier to forget. The remarkable history of the founding of Melbourne and settlement of Victoria is no exception. These stories must be told if we are ever to achieve reconciliation and some healing of the damage done to the first Australians.

Blessing of the Rivers

Junction Park, Off Cadell Street, Wentworth. NSW

All denominations, all faith groups, Aboriginal and other Australian community groups and individuals, across Australia, are invited to personally take a small bottle or container of water, (preferably no plastic), for a Blessing Of The Rivers ceremony, at the junction of the Murray-Darling rivers. This is a modest, non-political gesture of good will to focus community attention on the significance of water to life and a way that the Australian community can show symbolic support for our struggling rivers and communities. This very simple but profound action was suggested by South West Victorian farmer, Rob Rowley, in response to the current crisis facing our struggling river systems. In particular, the Murray-Darling river system.

If you can’t make it personally, you can send your small water bottle to: The Lions Club, PO BOX 1143, MILDURA 3502, who have generously agreed to collect and transport the water bottles to the river junction on the day. This action has no political organising body. It’s a community action of good will, in good faith. Shane Howard Thanks to Rob Rowley, Adele Howard & Helen Nolen-The Sisters of Mercy, The Lions Club of Mildura, Deb Bogenhuber, Cathryn Milne & to everyone who supports. *Australia Post are supportive and have advised that people can post water in a wine package, available at Australia Post offices or in smaller bottles that are well sealed, taped and protectively wrapped in material or cardboard. They have also agreed to make a donation to an appropriate environmental/water conservation community organisation.
