SHANE HOWARD - LYRICS

For the first time Shane Howard’s considerable body of work is collected into a single volume, illustrated with the writers own paintings and drawings, from his journals of journeys over the last thirty years.

Lyric Book available through One Day Hill Publishers and Goanna Arts.

Also avaialable at all good book stores.

Driftwood - Rare and Unreleased is a compilation of rare and unreleased songs that Shane has recorded over the last 30 years that didn’t find a home on released albums.

Most of the tracks date back 20 or 30 years, some were demos, some never made it for technical or personal reasons, but all these years later, they give a different picture, fill some gaps and have a unique story to tell as a collection.

Driftwood-Rare and Unreleased is available through MGM and Goanna Arts and all good record stores.

Presented by Melbourne International Arts Festival in association with Arts House and in collaboration with The Black Arm Band
THE BLACK ARM BAND 'DIRTSONG' Following celebrated world premiere performances at Melbourne Festival with murundak in 2006 and Hidden Republic in 2008, The Black Arm Band returns with a musical journey to stir the soul in collaboration with Miles Franklin Award winner Alexis Wright dirtsong is a music performance from Aboriginal Australia mixing traditional and contemporary songs, existing repertoire with newly commissioned music and sung in many Australian languages.

A narrative about country, dirtsong evokes a sense of geographical place and country as a series of encounters, memories, occurrences, obligations and nature. With words from Miles Franklin Award-winning author Alexis Wright (Carpentaria), these songs evoke a new conceptual and emotional map of Australia’s heartland while gently awakening some of Australia’s sleeping languages.Performed in Australian Aboriginal languages against a backdrop of lyrical film imagery.

SHANE HOWARD/JOHN SPILLANE (Ireland) The Famous Spiegeltent, Arts Centre Forecourt, 100 St Kilda Road, Melbourne

Two respected singer/songwriters come together to bridge the musical miles between their homelands of Australia and Ireland.

Shane Howard and John Spillane met in Steve Cooneys 'tower of song' in Naas, on the banks of the Shannon River early this century. Late into the night they scaled unimaginable heights and plumbed the murky depths. Fortunately, through the haze and the laughter, no one was injured. They resolved to try these improbable feats in a 'live' setting, some time in the future and it's taken until now to coerce John Spillane onto a leaky ship sailing between Ireland and Australia. John is a native of Cork, the County he lovingly describes as 'the centre of the universe', as it has been a huge influence on his work. Shane hails from South West Victoria, his music heavily influenced by both his ancestral ties to Ireland and his deep connection to the Indigenous Culture of Australia. This show is a great opportunity to hear two highly skilled musicians and exceptional songwriters come together in a unique cultural allegiance.

Regional Victoria’s most significant cultural Indigenous event , Tarerer promotes harmony and exchange through the celebration of culture and country.

The Tarerer Festival returns to the traditional site of the meeting of the coastal clans. This multi-cultural celebration is an invitation to gather together in the spirit of the ‘meeting of the clans’ from which Tarerer takes its name.

Amidst the stunning backdrop of Tower Hill, Tarerer Festival is nestled in the coastal dunes at Killarney in South West Victoria.

Outstanding Artists: Sol Nation, Brett Clarke & Band, Uncle Herb Patten, Lee Morgan, Jayden Lillyst, Patricia Clarke, Rory Ellis, Tjimba & the Yung Warriors, Djiva (WA), Johnny Lovett, Amy Saunders, The Chosen Few, Shane Howard, Sudanese Band, Tarerer Showcase and for the first time an opportunity to perform on the Open Stage.

Undercover in the Big Top commencing Saturday (12 noon) outstanding artists, children’s and youth activities and performances. Sunday (10 am til 4 30pm) will include ‘Women’s Business’ (all welcome) on Sunday morning, dance, games and coastal rock rambles.

THE BLACK ARM BAND
HIDDEN REPUBLIC

Two of Australia's foremost musical forces come together for an historic musical event that celebrates songs of hope and resistance from the open heart of Australia's contemporary Indigenous music
Since the stunning national response to murundak that had its world premiere as part of the 2006 Melbourne Festival, The Black Arm Band has experienced huge national acclaim. Uplifting and confronting, its music renders an intimate portrait of contemporary Indigenous life.
With a reputation for excellence and versatility the much-loved Melbourne Symphony Orchestra is Australia's oldest orchestra having celebrated its centenary in 2007.
Hidden Republic delves deeply into the songbook of contemporary Aboriginal music to reflect the renewed promise of 'post apology' Australia. This iconic music of national significance draws on the combined musical virtuosity and subtlety of 33 members of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra together with a blistering seven piece jazz section to underscore the vocal artistry of the 24 members of The Black Arm Band.

Shane will be a special guest at the Melbourne CD Launch of David Arden's 'Kookatha/Gunditjmara Clan and Robbie Bundle's EP 'Out There'. Dave and Robbie will also be joined by special guests Archie Roach, Amos Roach, Amy Saunders and Robert 'Froggie' Taylor.

David Arden is a Kookatha/Gunditjmara man.He is a respected singer, songwriter, musician and producer. Not afraid to confront the issues facing his people and the world beyond, his songs are gentle, singing of the simple beauty of family life, and yet vibrant, always treated with a musical freshness that sets the feet tapping and the heart soaring. David sings from the heart, with an incredible vocal range and a beautiful musicality. Kookatha/Gunditjmara clan is David’s first album.

Robbie Bundle began his musical journey in the 70’s and 80’s with bands like the notorious ‘Machine Gun Kelly’ and ‘Blackfoot’. He has gone onto play with and support musicians from all walks of life, a powerful force in the collective push for reconciliation in this country. These songs unite the timeless oral traditions of Indigenous Australia with the contemporary roots that are folk ,rock, rhythm and blues. The Black Arm Band-'murundak

In 2006 Shane began his involvement as Co-Music Director, with David Arden, of a unique musical event brought together by Artshouse Melbourne & the Melbourne International Arts Festival, under the Artistic Direction of Steven Richardson. Murundak means “alive” in Woirurrung language, the language spoken by the traditional custodians of the Melbourne area, specifically the Wurundjeri people. Murundak is an extraordinary musical event that celebrates music as an instrument of identity, resistance, resilience and a call to freedom. The soundtrack to Australian Indigenous life is alive with songs that express joy, hope, struggle and compassion. murundak re-orchestrated many of these anthemic works and coupled them with gentle laments and infectious love songs that take audiences on a spiritual journey of contemporary Indigenous Australia. The Black Arm Band is a 21-piece ensemble featuring a line up of exceptional soloists performing works from the inspirational songbook of contemporary Indigenous life. The Black Arm Band are amongst the most respected names in Australian indigenous music and include Archie Roach, Bart Willoughby, Joe Geia, Ruby Hunter, Bart Willoughby, Stephen Pigram, Lou Bennett, Racel Maza Long, Carole Fraser, Peter Rotumah, Kutcha Edwards, Kev Carmody, Mark Atkins, Shellie Morris, Emma Donovan, Dan Sultan and Dave Arden. These artists are complemented by other Australian musicians that have added their own unique artistic voices to Indigenous musical history, including Shane Howard, Paul Kelly and John Butler.

In 2008 'Murundak' will be appearing at:

*Sydney Festival, 22nd, 23rd January, 2008 *Perth International Arts Festival 23rd February, 2008 *WOMADelaide March 7th, 2008 *Royal Festival Hall, London, 26th June, 2008. London Int'l Festival of Theatre *RiverStage, Brisbane Festival, July 18th, 2008

Port Elliot, in South Australia, is situated by the mouth of the Murray River. A few years ago, Anne Todd, guitar teacher at the Port Elliot Primary School, re-wrote words to Shane's 1983 Franklin River anthem, "Let The Franklin Flow". The new version was called "Let The Murray Flow" and Shane was invited by Anne and the school to record the new version with the Port Elliot Primary School music students, "The Port Elliot Flyers". The idea kept growing and with the generous support of many people in the local community and with Shane donating his time and studio, the single and DVD were released for sale in 2006 to raise awareness and funds toward the plight of the Murray River. To find out more and buy the single and/or the DVD visit the Port Elliot Primary School's website: http://www.ptelliotps.sa.edu.au/murrayflow.htm

Shane is a founding member of the Tarerer Gunditj Project Association, a group consisting of Aboriginal and other Australians committed to cultural and environmental restoration in South West Victoria, where he was born and raised and now lives. The Tarerer lands were traditionally the site of a great annual meeting of the coastal clans. Tarerer promotes harmony and exchange through the celebration of culture and country. At a meeting at the old picnic ground in Framlingham forest, in 1995, a group of 12 people, black and white, decided to hold the first of the concerts to celebrate the abundance of talent in the local area and to encourage young Koori people. This has led to an annual Tarerer Festival for the past 10 years.

Shane, Gavan Jennings, (Victoria's Minister for Aboriginal Affairs), Andy Alberts, Vicki Couzens & Jarrah Bundle outside the new Tarerer Festival Offices & Hissing Swan Gallery in Port Fairy on November 15th, 2006. The Minister announced the $1 million project and talked of the State Government's committment to supporting cultural Tourism in South West Victoria. The funding enables the Tarerer Festival to expand and consolidate it's 11 year history as one of the State's premier indigenous cultural festivals.

The Tarerer Family Day was held on the weekend of January 20, 21. and the Tarerer Festival for 2007 will be held in Port Fairy on Nov. 10th & 11th. Check the Tarerer website for more details

Shane was a guest artist for the songstress, Carole King on her Australian,"Living Room Tour", shows: Perth, Hobart and Brisbane. www.caroleking.com. Howard was delighted to be invited to do the dates and said of Carole King, "I've long been an admirer of her work. She is a remarkably prolific writer of quality songs as well as being a brilliant advocate for the environment and communitarian values. Unlike so many of her contemporary artists, she has consciously avoided the trappings and pitfalls of fame. That's no mean feat for someone who created "Tapestry", one of the most iconic and successful albums of the 20th century. In Goanna days we toured with her long time friend and champion of her songs, James Taylor, so it's an honour to finally work with Carole and to hear her play live ".

Two weathered songmen and long time friends took their lifetime of songs and their individual and shared visions of Australia on a national tour together in August 2006. Following the success of their tour, the 2songmen plan to tour again in April/May 2007 with a live album compiled from the 2006 tour.

“There’s been times when the Australian music landscape has looked pretty bleak but I can always count on a Shane Howard song to make me sit up and say, “Yes that’s it!” I’ve known him for a long time, felt he was my countryman, an ally…. it seems natural that we should tour together. With the two of us performing on each other’s songs, it’ll bring more weight to what we do”
                                                                                                   - Neil Murray

“Neil Murray’s songs and writings speak to me about Australia, in a way that few other artists can. The loss and longing, the need for those of us, as migrant Australians, to understand this Aboriginal Country and create a new way to belong here. Neil’s never opted for the easy road. The hard edged reality of life on the fringes as well as the poetic grandeur of the landscape are all there in his powerful body of work."
                                                                                                 - Shane Howard

“Shane Howard and Neil Murray made the journey into Aboriginal Australia and never came out.”

Howard has been awarded for his outstanding contribution to songwriting and to Australian and indigenous music for almost 30 years. Top duo link up for a few crowd-pleasers

THE overflowing audience that witnessed Australian country star Troy Cassar-Daley's Saturday afternoon performance got a welcome bonus. Cassar-Daley was joined on stage by one of his heroes and Port Fairy Folk Festival Artist Of The Year Shane Howard for renditions of Willie Nelson's  Riverboy and Howard's own Factory Man.   (

Maintaining his solid ground

Celtic roots are a key to Port Fairy's artist of the year, writes Andra Jackson.

Songwriter Shane Howard considers the way a song can take on a life of its own to be as "mystical as ever . . . you just never know where songs end up". Three decades after he wrote what has become a landmark recording in Australian rock, Goanna's Solid Rock, there is an American Indian recording of it.        (The Age)
