The Black Arm Band-'murundak In 2006 Shane began his involvement as Co-Music Director, with David Arden, of a unique musical event brought together by Artshouse Melbourne & the Melbourne International Arts Festival, under the Artistic Direction of Steven Richardson. Murundak means “alive” in Woirurrung language, the language spoken by the traditional custodians of the Melbourne area, specifically the Wurundjeri people. Murundak is an extraordinary musical event that celebrates music as an instrument of identity, resistance, resilience and a call to freedom. The soundtrack to Australian Indigenous life is alive with songs that express joy, hope, struggle and compassion. murundak re-orchestrated many of these anthemic works and coupled them with gentle laments and infectious love songs that take audiences on a spiritual journey of contemporary Indigenous Australia. The Black Arm Band is a 21-piece ensemble featuring a line up of exceptional soloists performing works from the inspirational songbook of contemporary Indigenous life. The Black Arm Band are amongst the most respected names in Australian indigenous music and include Archie Roach, Bart Willoughby, Joe Geia, Ruby Hunter, Bart Willoughby, Stephen Pigram, Lou Bennett, Racel Maza Long, Carole Fraser, Peter Rotumah, Kutcha Edwards, Kev Carmody,Mark Atkins, Shellie Morris, Emma Donovan, Dan Sultan and Dave Arden. These artists are complemented by other Australian musicians that have added their own unique artistic voices to Indigenous musical history, including Shane Howard, Paul Kelly and John Butler.
In 2008 'Murundak' will be appearing at:
*Sydney Festival, 22nd, 23rd January, 2008
*Perth International Arts Festival 23rd February, 2008

New Album:
Shane's new studio album, "Songs Of Love And Resistance", was released on November 20th, 2006, through Shane's own independent label, Goanna Arts and distributed by MGM Distribution.
Port Elliot, in South Australia, is situated by the mouth of the Murray River. A few years ago, Anne Todd, guitar teacher at the Port Elliot Primary School, re-wrote words to Shane's 1983 Franklin River anthem, "Let The Franklin Flow". The new version was called "Let The Murray Flow" and Shane was invited by Anne and the school to record the new version with the Port Elliot Primary School music students, "The Port Elliot Flyers". The idea kept growing and with the generous support of many people in the local community and with Shane donating his time and studio, the single and DVD were released for sale in 2006 to raise awareness and funds toward the plight of the Murray River. To find out more and buy the single and/or the DVD visit the Port Elliot Primary School's website: http://www.ptelliotps.sa.edu.au/murrayflow.htm
Shane is a founding member of the Tarerer Gunditj Project Association, a group consisting of Aboriginal and other Australians committed to cultural and environmental restoration in South West Victoria, where he was born and raised and now lives. The Tarerer lands were traditionally the site of a great annual meeting of the coastal clans. Tarerer promotes harmony and exchange through the celebration of culture and country. At a meeting at the old picnic ground in Framlingham forest, in 1995, a group of 12 people, black and white, decided to hold the first of the concerts to celebrate the abundance of talent in the local area and to encourage young Koori people. This has led to an annualTarerer Festivalfor the past 10 years.
Shane, Gavan Jennings, (Victoria's Minister for Aboriginal Affairs), Andy Alberts, Vicki Couzens & Jarrah Bundle outside the new Tarerer Festival Offices & Hissing Swan Gallery in Port Fairy on November 15th, 2006. The Minister announced the $1 million project and talked of the State Government's committment to supporting cultural Tourism in South West Victoria. The funding enables the Tarerer Festival to expand and consolidate it's 11 year history as one of the State's premier indigenous cultural festivals.
The Tarerer Family Day was held on the weekend of January 20, 21. and the Tarerer Festival for 2007 will be held in Port Fairy on Nov. 10th & 11th. Check the Tarererwebsite for more details
Shane was a guest artist for the songstress, Carole King on her Australian,"Living Room Tour", shows: Perth, Hobart and Brisbane. www.caroleking.com. Howard was delighted to be invited to do the dates and said of Carole King, "I've long been an admirer of her work. She is a remarkably prolific writer of quality songs as well as being a brilliant advocate for the environment and communitarian values. Unlike so many of her contemporary artists, she has consciously avoided the trappings and pitfalls of fame. That's no mean feat for someone who created "Tapestry", one of the most iconic and successful albums of the 20th century. In Goanna days we toured with her long time friend and champion of her songs, James Taylor, so it's an honour to finally work with Carole and to hear her play live ".
Two weathered songmen and long time friends took their lifetime of songs and their individual and shared visions of Australia on a national tour together in August 2006. Following the success of their tour, the 2songmen plan to tour again in April/May 2007 with a live album compiled from the 2006 tour.
“There’s been times when the Australian music landscape has looked pretty bleak but I can always count on a Shane Howard song to make me sit up and say, “Yes that’s it!” I’ve known him for a long time, felt he was my countryman, an ally…. it seems natural that we should tour together. With the two of us performing on each other’s songs, it’ll bring more weight to what we do”
- Neil Murray
“Neil Murray’s songs and writings speak to me about Australia, in a way that few other artists can. The loss and longing, the need for those of us, as migrant Australians, to understand this Aboriginal Country and create a new way to belong here. Neil’s never opted for the easy road. The hard edged reality of life on the fringes as well as the poetic grandeur of the landscape are all there in his powerful body of work."
- Shane Howard
“Shane Howard and Neil Murray made the journey into Aboriginal Australia and never came out.”
- Martin Flanagan
Countdown Spectacular
"History never repeats..." sang Split Enz. Not so says the Countdown Spectacular, which brings together a huge collection of performers and bands who featured on the very succesful 1970's/1980's TV show.

Maintaining his solid ground
Celtic roots are a key to Port Fairy's artist of the year, writes Andra Jackson.
Songwriter Shane Howard considers the way a song can take on a life of its own to be as "mystical as ever . . . you just never know where songs end up". Three decades after he wrote what has become a landmark recording in Australian rock, Goanna's Solid Rock, there is an American Indian recording of it. (The Age)
