Goanna Arts was formed by Shane Howard as an independent label to give voice to his own work. It began as a publishing house in the early 1980's as Uluru Music, for obvious reasons, but after a request from the Aboriginal community at Uluru, the name was changed to Big Heart productions in the '90's. In 2003, Shane changed the name to Goanna Arts. There were many requests from fellow musicians and Shane expanded the label to represent other artists. This is not your usual record company or record label. Each artist takes responsibility for their own projects so that artistic and financial control reside with the artist. ‘Tarerer- Welcome To Country,’ is a contemporary compilation, celebrating the unique music of indigenous artists of South West Victoria, (Gunditjmara/Kirrae Wurrong), along with a few other local friends. Artists such as Archie Roach, Andy Alberts, Shane Howard, Neil Murray, David Arden and Amy Saunders have all taken part in the annual Tarerer Festival, held in Southwest Victoria for the past 11 years. Many of these artists have also taken part in‘ Welcome to Country’, a project partner and a cross cultural initiative that facilitates deeper understanding of contemporary Aboriginal life. Royalties from this album flow through to the artists. More info: www.tarerer.com.au www.welcometocountry.com |
